Why Lids Leak — The Pressure Physics

At 18,000+ RPM, spinning ingredients experience centrifugal force that pushes them outward against the jar walls and upward against the lid. Dense ingredients like coconut or soaked dal create significant upward pressure on the lid seal — especially when the jar is more than 60% full.

The 5-Second Stretch Test
Before buying a replacement, do this quick test to confirm the gasket is the problem (not the lid or the jar groove).
Remove the Gasket
Pull the rubber gasket out of the lid groove. It should come out easily — no tools needed.
Measure the Diameter
Lay the gasket flat and measure its inner diameter. Compare to the lid groove diameter. If the gasket is 3mm+ wider than the groove, it has stretched.
The Snap Test
Stretch the gasket gently and release. A healthy gasket snaps back immediately. A fatigued gasket returns slowly or stays stretched.

Start with Method 1 (free, 15 minutes). If it doesn't hold, move to Method 2. If you have a clip-on lid, go straight to Method 3.
The Cold Water Reset
The Desi Hack — Temporary but Effective
- 1Remove the gasket from the lid groove.
- 2Fill a bowl with ice-cold water (add 4–5 ice cubes to tap water).
- 3Submerge the gasket completely and leave for 15–20 minutes.
- 4The cold causes the rubber polymers to contract, temporarily restoring the original diameter.
- 5Remove from water, dry completely, and re-seat in the lid groove immediately.
- 6Test the seal by filling the jar with water and checking for leaks.

Rubber is a polymer that expands when heated and contracts when cooled (thermal expansion/contraction). Hot water washing causes the gasket to expand beyond its operational diameter. Cold water temporarily reverses this expansion. This is a temporary fix — the gasket will re-expand with the next hot wash.
After the cold water reset, avoid washing the gasket in hot water. Wash in cold or lukewarm water only. This extends the effectiveness of the reset significantly.
Lid Leak vs. Base Leak — Know the Difference
Lid leaks spray upward and outward. Base leaks drip downward into the motor. Base leaks are more serious — they can damage the motor and cause electric shocks.
The "Air Buffer" Principle — Why Fill Level Matters

The Hot Ingredient Warning
Never Grind These Hot
- Boiled tomatoes or tomato puree
- Cooked dal or lentils
- Hot chutneys or sauces
- Freshly boiled vegetables
- Any ingredient above 60°C
Hot ingredients create steam inside the jar. Steam pressure builds rapidly and can exceed the gasket's sealing force — causing the lid to pop off suddenly. Always allow hot ingredients to cool to room temperature before grinding.
The "2-Inch Rule"
A simple rule that eliminates lid leakage in 90% of cases: always leave at least 2 inches (5cm) of empty space between the top of the ingredients and the lid.
2 inches of air buffer = enough space for the vortex to form without creating upward pressure on the lid. This is the engineering basis for the Max Fill Line on every mixer jar.
Liquid Grinding Special Rule
When grinding liquids (lassi, smoothies, soups), fill to a maximum of 50% capacity — not 60%. Liquids create more pressure than solids because they transmit force more efficiently. The 50% rule for liquids is non-negotiable.

How to Measure Your Lid Diameter
Remove the Old Gasket
Pull the gasket out of the lid groove. If it's too degraded to measure, measure the groove instead.
Measure the Inner Diameter
Use a ruler or measuring tape. Measure the inner diameter of the gasket (the hole in the middle) in millimetres. This is the critical measurement.
Note the Cross-Section
Measure the thickness of the gasket material (the rubber ring itself). Standard is 3–4mm. Thicker gaskets provide better sealing.
